HMRC’s Making Tax Digital for Income Tax – What You Need to Know

At Prime Services Manchester, we believe in keeping our clients informed about the key changes that may affect how they manage their tax affairs. HMRC has recently released new updates and webinars to help taxpayers and agents prepare for the next major phase of Making Tax Digital (MTD) — this time for Income Tax.

From April 2026, MTD for Income Tax will begin to roll out in stages. This means that individuals with qualifying income from property or self-employment will need to keep digital records and send updates to HMRC using MTD-compatible software. The changes will come into effect gradually, depending on the level of income:

  • From April 2026, for those earning over £50,000
  • From April 2027, for those earning over £30,000
  • And from April 2028, for those earning over £20,000

HMRC has already started communicating with agents, landlords, and businesses ahead of these changes, with more information expected from April 2025. Once you start using MTD for Income Tax, new rules around submissions and payments will also apply — including updated penalties for late filing or late payments.

To support taxpayers and professionals through this transition, HMRC is running a series of free Talking Points webinars. These sessions provide practical guidance, tips, and demonstrations on how to prepare for MTD. Topics include how to get ready for MTD if you’re an agent, how to sign clients up, how landlords and joint property owners can prepare, and an overview of the new penalty system. Each session is designed to help you understand what’s changing, who will be affected, and what actions need to be taken before the new rules become mandatory.

You can find the live and recorded webinars on HMRC’s official website:

The move to digital record-keeping represents a significant shift in how self-employed individuals and landlords manage their taxes. While it may seem like a big change, it also presents an opportunity to improve record accuracy, reduce errors, and make tax management more efficient throughout the year.

At Prime Services Manchester, we’re already helping clients prepare for MTD by reviewing bookkeeping systems, recommending suitable software, and offering practical support to ensure a smooth transition. If you’re unsure about what these changes mean for you or when you’ll need to start, we’re here to help guide you every step of the way.
